The only type of corruption of transmitted data that has been discussed is the error. An error actually represents two unknown quantities in general: location and symbol value. In the binary case this implies to location alone. An erasure, on the other hand, has a known location but a completely unknown value. An erasure could arise if the demodulator output failed to pass some confidence level, giving rise to considerable uncertainty as to the value of the symbol or binary digit. The position in the code word would then be flagged at the decoder input as erasure. Co-ordinated by Dexter Sinister, printed by die Keure, Belgium, in an edition of 1000 and published by the Wallis Annenberg Department of Photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
